How to write thank you card messages

Published on by Sarah-Beth Watkins

Everybody likes to receive a thank you card. However, what should you write in them? This article has a look at the different types of messages you can write in a thank you card.

From formal to informal

To begin with, choose a card that will appeal to your recipient. Most thank you cards are blank inside or come with a very brief message. Pick one with an appropriate picture and then, you are ready to write your message.

Formal

You can make your message formal. If you are sending your card to an employer or organisation, you may want to give your card a formal message. Try something like –

"Thank you for (add in) which was gratefully received. Your thoughtfulness is much appreciated".

Add in whether you are thanking them for a gift or for an action. Perhaps, you are thanking them for an act of kindness, help or support. In that case, you can say "thank you for your recent support. It has been much appreciated". You must address it to the main person concerned.

Informal

On a more informal level, you can try something like "Hi everybody, thanks for all you’ve done to help over the past few weeks. I couldn’t have done without you! Love you all". Or if you have received a fabulous gift: "Thanks so much for your pressie. It was really thoughtful of you and I love it."

Other ways to write messages

You can also make a thank you message humourous. Give your recipient a laugh when he or she opens your card. Try something like "Thanks so much for the gift. I’ll add it to the million others I got. Be round to see you as soon as I can get through the pile that's blocking the door."

Show appreciation

You can also let people know how appreciated their actions have been. If someone has really helped you out, tell them. Don’t worry about sounding soppy. Let them know it has meant the world to you. Try something like "Thank you for all you have done for me lately. I wouldn’t have got through it without you. You are the best. Much Love."

Use poems or quotes

You can also use poems or quotes. Make them up yourself or have a look through books at the library or online. Again, think of the person you are sending your card to and choose something that you know they will like.
